Archived: Editorial: There Is Still Reason to Give Thanks, and We Should

Thanksgiving Day is a day to give thanks for the food we are about to share, not the food we don’t have.

A day to give thanks for the shelter we have and to remember those who are homeless.

Give thanks for whatever good health we have and pray for those who are ill.

Give thanks for those who devote their life to protecting our country, whether as first responders or in uniform in other countries.

But most of all, it is a time to give thanks for all we have and not to regret the things we don’t have. It is a time to give thanks for family, friends and neighbors.

Yes, during the past two years, our country has been hit by crisis after crisis: fires, flood, hurricanes, war, and now the economy. And while it may seem too hard or to insincere, it is during the rough times that we should bend our heads in gratitude for the things we do have, because there is always someone whose troubles are greater.

Nothing is beyond this country’s ability to provide help to those in need, our homeless, our hungry and our sick. We’ve seen this time and time again during recent hard times and disasters.

Today, and for the past week, countless numbers of good Samaritans have been providing their neighbors with a good meal and a smile to cheer those stressed by ill health, financial crisis and despair.

To those lucky enough to be able to gather with family or friends to share the bounty of our land, we encourage you to remember how lucky we are to live in a country where hope is never ending and where the goodness of individuals can help us all overcomes the struggles in our daily life.

EGP wishes you a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving.
