Re: Eight Applicants Demonstrate Interest in Running New East LA High School (pub/ 5/5/2011)

Where does the LA Unified Board go to find names for the schools in our community? Where did they come up with the name East LA Star? Most of the high and middle schools that service our children are named after anglos with only a minimal connection to our history. In recent years we have seen efforts to move away from that colonizing ideology that viewed us as foreigners and sought to inculcate our children with the notion that the heroes of this nation came from anglo or non latino communities. We now have the Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez and the Miguel Contreras Learning Centers, for example.

Our community has produced many significant people who deserve being remembered by having a school named after them, so why does the school board choose a name as irrelevant as East LA Star? This name represents a step backward from the progress we’ve started making in recent years and I suggest we change the name before the school opens. How about Ruben Salazar Learning Center?
