Fatal Motorcycle Crash Closes 5 Freeway

A fatal motorcycle crash that closed three lanes of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Commerce was under investigation Sunday.

Killed in the crash at about 1:40 p.m. on Saturday on the northbound side of the freeway approaching Garfield Avenue was 19-year-old Joseline Celeste Hernandez of Los Angeles, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Hernandez was a passenger on a 2013 Yamaha R6 operated by a 26-year-old South Gate man, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, according to the CHP.

The Yamaha operator, whose name was not released, was splitting lanes in moderate to heavy traffic when the bike collided with three other vehicles, one of them a pickup truck towing a fifth wheel that left a narrow space for the bike, the CHP reported.

Hernandez suffered fatal head injuries when she and the bike operator were ejected, according to the CHP. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash closed three northbound freeway lanes for about four hours, according to the CHP.
